Russian foreign minister Lavrov arrives in China

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in China on Monday. He is expected to hold talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.

During his two-day visit to China, he and Wang will meet in the southern resort city of Guilin.

Wang is expected to explain the issues discussed by the top diplomats of China and the United States when they met in Alaska last week. Wang and Lavrov are also expected to confirm strengthening cooperation between the two countries in their talks.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said at a news conference on Monday that the talks will further accelerate development of bilateral relations.

The talks come as Beijing is wary of the US-led apparent "containment strategy" in the Indo-Pacific region directed at China. The leaders of the US, Japan, Australia and India held their first "Quad" summit online earlier this month. US foreign and defense chiefs visited Japan and South Korea last week.

Russia's relations with the US have also been tense recently. The Kremlin reacted sharply to remarks by US President Joe Biden, who indicated last week that he regards Russian President Vladimir Putin to be a killer.
