Global coronavirus cases top 90 million

Coronavirus cases around the world have exceeded 90 million.

Johns Hopkins University in the United States says the total number of confirmed cases stood at 90.28 million as of 6:00 UTC on Monday.

It took 166 days for the case count to reach 10 million, but the pace has picked up. It took only 15 days for the number to grow from 80 million to 90 million.

The United States has the most cases. Although vaccinations began in the country last month, a record of more than 300,000 new cases were confirmed on January 2.

Since then, the daily tally mostly exceeded 200,000.
The pandemic is showing no signs of subsiding. Virus variants that were first found in Britain and South Africa have been spread to other regions.
