Heavy snow hitting Sea of Japan coast areas

Weather officials are warning of heavy snowfall in wide areas along the Sea of Japan. They forecast more snow this weekend, advising people to be cautious of traffic disruptions, power outages and snow-related accidents.

As of 6 p.m. on Friday, it had snowed 156 centimeters in the city of Joetsu, Niigata Prefecture, 98 centimeters in Aomori City and 83 centimeters in Toyama City.

Snowfall is expected to continue through Sunday, mainly in areas along the Sea of Japan coast from northern to western Japan.

During a period of 24 hours through Saturday evening, up to 120 centimeters of snow is expected in Niigata Prefecture, and 110 centimeters in the Hokuriku region.

Heavy snow forced more than 380 flights to be canceled on Friday. Airlines have already decided to cancel nearly 140 flights on Saturday.

Airline companies say more flight cancellations are possible depending on weather conditions. They are calling on people to check updates on airline websites.
