The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is aiming to increase the number of beds for coronavirus patients in the capital's public hospitals by 600 to 1,700.
The Tokyo government has so far secured 4,000 beds for those patients across the capital.
But experts warn that a lot more patients may need to be hospitalized in the capital, if infections continue to spread.
Tokyo officials say they currently have 1,100 beds ready at 14 hospitals run by the metropolitan government and organizations affiliated with it.
They say they will try to secure a total of 1,700 beds as soon as possible, but that there is no way to tell at this time when they will reach the target number.
