Police officer injured in Capitol siege dies

US Capitol Police say an officer has died from injuries he sustained when supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the legislative building.

A statement by the Capitol Police says the officer died on Thursday night. It says he was injured while physically engaging with protesters and passed away at a hospital.

The officer's death is the fifth fatality linked to Wednesday's siege. A female rioter was fatally shot by police. Three others died due to "medical emergencies" on the grounds of the Capitol.

The deaths are likely to prompt some to intensify their criticism of Trump, who urged his supporters to march to the Capitol. Congress was in session at the time. The members were in the process of certifying Joe Biden's presidential election victory.
