Pelosi, others blame Trump for Capitol siege

Prominent US politicians have called for removing President Donald Trump from office. They say he is to blame for his supporters' storming of the Capitol building on Wednesday.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Thursday, "The president of the United States incited an armed insurrection against America."

She called on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to force Trump from office. She also suggested that Congress convene to impeach the president if Pence and the Cabinet refuse to act.

Trump supporters broke into the Capitol on Wednesday and disrupted a joint session of Congress to certify President-elect Joe Biden's election victory.

A woman was shot and killed by police. 68 people were arrested.

Some Republican governors and lawmakers are also calling for Trump's removal. His term will end in less than two weeks.

Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao said she would be resigning because of the events at the Capitol. She tweeted, "Our country experienced a traumatic and entirely avoidable event," adding, "It has deeply troubled me in a way that I simply cannot set aside."
