European leaders condemn Washington violence

European leaders have condemned supporters of US President Donald Trump who stormed the Capitol in Washington on Wednesday to protest President-elect Joe Biden's win.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Twitter described the scenes in Washington as "disgraceful." He wrote, "The United States stands for democracy around the world and it is now vital that there should be a peaceful and orderly transfer of power."

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian tweeted, "The violent acts against American institutions are a grave attack against democracy. The American people's will and vote must be respected."

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas posted, "Trump and his supporters must accept the decision of American voters at last and stop trampling on democracy."

European Council President Charles Michel tweeted, "The US Congress is a temple of democracy." He added, "We trust the US to ensure a peaceful transfer of power."
