US media reports say the Democratic Party has won at least one Senate seat in two closely contested runoff elections in the state of Georgia.
Voting took place for two of the 100 Senate seats on Tuesday. The Republican Party had 50 seats after the November elections, and the Democrats had 48.
ABC television and other media say Democrat Raphael Warnock is projected to win one of the runoffs. The victory gives the Democrats 49 seats.
President-elect Joe Biden's Democratic Party needs to win the one remaining seat to gain control of the Senate as well as the House of Representatives.
If the Republican candidate wins, Biden's administration will have to contend with a divided Congress.
