The Tokyo Metropolitan Government says it confirmed 1,591 new cases of the coronavirus in the Japanese capital on Wednesday. The figure is the highest daily count to date.
The latest figure marks an increase of more than 250 from the previous single-day record of 1,337 reported on December 31.
The daily tally has topped 1,000 for the second consecutive day, following 1,278 on Tuesday.
The seven-day average of new cases is also likely to surpass 1,000 for the first time, indicating infections are spreading rapidly.
The total number of cases in Tokyo stood at 66,343.
According to Tokyo's criteria, the number of seriously-ill COVID-19 patients stood at 113, up 2 from Tuesday. That number is also the highest to date.
