US agencies: Russia likely behind govt. hack

Top US security agencies say Russia appears to be responsible for a massive hacking campaign targeting the federal government.

It emerged last month that the networks of parts of the US government including the Treasury and Commerce departments had been compromised by malware.

The FBI, the National Security Agency, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency issued a joint statement on Tuesday about an ongoing investigation into the issue.

The agencies said the hackers are "likely Russian in origin," and that the attacks were carried out to gather information.

They said they had so far identified fewer than 10 government agencies that were hacked.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo earlier indicated Russia was involved. The joint statement appears to back this view.

Russia's presidential office last month strongly denied the accusation.
