Children brave cold in New Year karate practice

Children on a western Japanese island have braved the cold of the sea for their first karate practice of the year.

A dojo in the town of Okinoshima, Shimane Prefecture, held the annual New Year's event on Sunday.

Eight members, ranging from elementary to high school students, went into the sea after running on the beach to warm-up.

They practiced basic karate movements including thrusting and kicking in water up to their knees. The weather was cloudy, and their feet turned red in the icy water.

After the practice, the children pledged to work hard throughout the year and shouted, "Don't give in to the coronavirus!"

The dojo says it had to cancel some group exercises and refrain from taking part in a competition held outside the island last year due to the coronavirus.
