French police break up rave of 2,500 party-goers

French police have shut down an illegal rave with 2,500 party-goers at an unused warehouse in the western city of Lieuron.

Local media reported that the party started on New Year's Eve and continued through Saturday morning.

Large gatherings of this sort are strictly prohibited and an 8:00 p.m. curfew is in place in France to prevent further spread of the coronavirus.

As the police tried to stop the event, some of the participants threw rocks at them and damaged police vehicles. Several officers were reportedly injured.

Police questioned about 1,600 participants for non-compliance with the curfew and not wearing a mask. Organizers are in police custody.

Local health officials cited very high infection risks in a statement and urged anyone who was at the party to self-isolate for seven days.
