Tokyo confirms 814 new coronavirus cases

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported 814 new cases of the coronavirus in the Japanese capital on Saturday.

That's the second highest number for a Saturday in Tokyo, following 949 cases recorded a week earlier.

The capital reported more than 1,000 new cases for the first time on Thursday, New Year's Eve.

On New Year's Day, Tokyo confirmed 783 cases, the second largest daily figure for a Friday.

The total number of people who have tested positive for the coronavirus in Tokyo now stands at 61,774.

Tokyo officials say the number of seriously ill patients reached 94, up six from Friday and the highest since the state of emergency was lifted in May.
