Chinese President Xi Jinping has hailed his country's economic recovery from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, and he underscored the legitimacy of the Chinese Communist Party's rule in a New Year address.
His speech was delivered on Thursday through state-run TV and other media.
Looking back at 2020, Xi said China overcame challenges brought by the pandemic and made great accomplishments in bringing the virus under control and developing the economy.
Xi noted his country was the first major economy to register positive growth, and that its gross domestic product for 2020 is expected to pass a milestone of 100 trillion yuan, or about 15 trillion dollars.
He also said nearly 100 million people were lifted out of poverty over the past eight years, achieving success in eradicating extreme poverty.
Xi added that China's Communist Party will mark the 100th anniversary of its founding this year, and said the country "will certainly realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation".
