WHO says COVID-19 measures are absolutely needed

The World Health Organization has stressed that restrictive measures in many European countries are absolutely necessary to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

The WHO says daily totals of new infection cases surpassed 120,000 in Europe twice this month.

During a news conference on Thursday, the WHO's Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge expressed his concern.

Kluge said daily infection cases in Europe have doubled to tripled compared to April. He added the number of hospital admissions is also increasing. He also said the rise in confirmed cases is partly due to more testing.

And Kluge said the number of deaths has fallen to one-fifth, citing an improvement in hospital treatments.

The WHO has called on European countries to closely monitor the spread of influenza in the winter season, saying a double epidemic of flu and COVID-19 could apply further stress on medical institutions.
