China's state-run Xinhua news agency reports that Chinese President Xi Jinping has sent a congratulatory message to Japan's new prime minister, Suga Yoshihide.
The report says Xi described China and Japan as friendly neighbors and important nations to Asia and the world.
Xi reportedly said that maintaining long-term stability and developing friendly cooperative relations serve the interests of both countries and will contribute to the stability and prosperity of Asia and the world.
The news agency also says Xi proposed that the two nations promote the establishment of China-Japan relations for a new era and make active contributions so they can develop together.
The media says Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has also sent a congratulatory message to Suga.
