Coronavirus cases surge outside Japan, China

Cases of infection of the new coronavirus have now been confirmed in 74 countries and regions outside mainland China and Japan.

There have been 9,689 cases and 161 deaths so far.

South Korea tops the list with 4,812 cases, followed by Italy with 2,036, Iran with 1,501, France with 191, Germany with 157, Spain with 121, Singapore with 108, Hong Kong with 91, Kuwait with 56 and Bahrain with 49.

Andorra, Latvia and Morocco have each reported their first cases.

The death toll stands at 66 in Iran, 52 in Italy, 28 in South Korea, six in the United States, three in France, two in Hong Kong and one each in the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and San Marino.

Of the people who disembarked the Diamond Princess cruise ship last month, 45 of the roughly 300 Americans who returned home on chartered flights tested positive for the virus.

Australia confirmed that 10 passengers tested positive after returning home. Hong Kong confirmed nine, Britain four, Israel and Russia three and Taiwan one. One Australian has died.
