First coronavirus case confirmed in Okinawa

Officials of Japan's Okinawa Prefecture say they've confirmed an infection of the new coronavirus, the first such case in the Kyushu region including Okinawa.

The officials said on Friday that a female taxi driver in her 60s tested positive for the virus.

They say she very likely had contact with passengers of the cruise ship Diamond Princess, which called at Naha Port on February 1.

The ship later went to Yokohama Port, but has been quarantined there because of an onboard viral outbreak.

The case in Okinawa was detected after the prefecture checked the health of about 200 people who may have had contact with passengers.

The driver had a cough and was tested for the virus after a doctor suspected she had pneumonia.
