A regional coast guard in Japan says its South Korean counterpart has asked to cancel a joint drill for maritime accidents.
The 8th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters in Maizuru City, Kyoto Prefecture, revealed on Friday that the joint exercise scheduled for next Wednesday will not take place. The coast guard said it received the request on Wednesday .
Coast guards from the two countries had planned to use patrol and rescue vessels for the training drill about 180 kilometers off the Oki Islands in the Sea of Japan.
The regional headquarters said it is not in a position to comment on whether the Korea Coast Guard's decision is linked to the recent deterioration in bilateral ties.
It said the cancellation is regrettable, but added that it will try to find ways to boost cooperation with its South Korean counterpart.
