8 schoolchildren killed in a knife attack in China

A man with a knife killed eight children and wounded two others at an elementary school in central China.

Local media report the attack occurred in Enshi City, Hubei Province on Monday morning. The day was the first of the new school year.

Police have detained a 40-year-old man and are investigating the motive for the knifing.

The suspect was reportedly released from jail last year, after serving a sentence for attempted murder.

Attacks on schoolchildren have occurred before in China.

In January, 20 kids were injured after a man with a hammer struck them at an elementary school in Beijing.

In April 2018, nine junior high school students were stabbed to death in Yulin City, Shaanxi Province, when they were on their way home.
