Nikkei briefly dips below 21,000

Strong volatility prevailed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Friday. Gains at the open were short-lived and the Nikkei Average briefly fell below the 21,000-level for the first time in seven months.

The Nikkei Index ended the day down 84 points or 0.4 percent lower, at 21,184. It was the lowest close since late March.
