Indonesia's president has compared the state of the world's economy and its current trade spats to the Hollywood blockbuster movie, 'Avengers: Infinity War'.
Joko Widodo made the statement at a World Economic Forum on ASEAN meeting in Vietnam. He compared ASEAN members to the Avengers super heroes fighting to keep world order intact.
He said, "What is happening in the world economy today is that we are heading toward infinity war. Not since the great depression of the 1930s have trade wars erupted with the intensity that they have today."
The meeting comes at a time of protectionist American policies. The US has increased tariffs on a number of countries. That includes a battle with China many are calling a trade war.
At the meeting, Chinese Vice Premier Hu Chunhua said, "Historical experience teaches us that self-isolation leads nowhere. The only correct choice is openness and cooperation."
The talks continue through Thursday and will focus on regional growth by new technologies such as AI and robotics.
