Death toll reaches 51 from floods, landslides

Authorities in Japan warn that the death toll may rise in floods and landslides caused by record rainfall in the western part of the country.

They say that as of 10:30 PM on Saturday, 51 people are dead and 3 were found unconscious. At least 48 remain missing.

Hiroshima prefecture was the hardest hit with 23 people reported dead so far and 21 missing. 18 were killed in Ehime prefecture and 7 are reported missing.

Individual fatalities were reported in Okayama, Hyogo, Kyoto, Shiga, Fukuoka and Yamaguchi prefectures.

Three people were found unconscious in Hiroshima prefecture.

The flooding and landslides are hindering rescue operations.
