M5.4 earthquake hits Hokkaido

An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 5.4 struck the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido early on Saturday morning.

The Meteorological Agency says the quake hit at around 4 AM. It says the focus was at a depth of 53 kilometers and was located off the Nemuro Peninsula.

The agency says there is no risk of a tsunami.

In the town of Nakashibetsu, the jolt registered 5 minus on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 0 to 7.

Tremors with an intensity of 4 were detected in Nemuro City and in some other areas.
