Fukushima kids perform with Vienna Boys Choir

Children from Fukushima prefecture took part in a concert in Austria with the Vienna Boys Choir ahead of the 7th anniversary of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan.

The MJC Ensemble, comprising children from Minamisoma City near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, joined the charity event in Vienna on Tuesday.

About 200 people from Japan performed with the choir and Austrian music enthusiasts.

They sang the "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven's 9th Symphony and "Hana wa Saku," or "Flowers Will Bloom," a song encouraging revival efforts in the disaster-hit areas.

The concert was hosted by a group that organizes music-themed charity activities.

The proceeds will be donated to those affected by the quake, tsunami and nuclear accident.

One Austrian woman said the event reminded her of the importance of mutual aid. A man said he wants to help people affected by the disaster get back on their feet.

Yuka Ito of the MJC Ensemble said she hopes her group's songs will cheer and inspire people.
