Fire breaks out at oil refinery in Taiwan

A fire and multiple blasts have occurred at an oil refinery near an urban district in northern Taiwan.

The refinery in the city of Taoyuan exploded early on Monday.

Footage posted on the Internet shows raging flames and plumes of black smoke.

Local media quote residents in the area as saying they were awoken by the sound of explosions.

About 40 fire vehicles were sent to the scene, and the fire was brought under control about an hour later.

There are no reports of injury so far.

Officials of the refinery say it went under maintenance recently. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
