The Greater Tokyo area is bracing for heavy snow. Weather officials say a developing low pressure system and a rain front will move over waters south of the country's main island to the east on Monday.
Snow has already started falling in mountainous areas of western Japan as well as in central parts, including downtown Tokyo.
Heavy snow is forecast between Monday evening and early Tuesday in Tokyo and surrounding areas.
By Tuesday morning, up to 10 centimeters of snow is expected in Tokyo's 23 wards and 30 centimeters in other areas.
Snow is likely to accumulate even in the 23 wards.
The weather officials are warning of possible traffic disruptions during evening rush hour.
