Born in 1970, Abe made his theater debut after he joined Matsuo Suzuki's theater company "Otona Keikaku" in 1992. He has since starred in a number of plays, movies and dramas, and is also the singer for the punk band "Group Tamashii."
Abe's ability to play a spectrum of roles—from comedic to serious, average citizen to eccentric characters—has won him numerous accolades, including the Japan Academy Film Prize for Best Actor in a Leading Role, the Blue Ribbon Award for Best Actor, and the Yomiuri Theater Awards Best Actor.
