The Village of Japanese Paper - Fukui Prefecture

Venetia travels to Fukui to visit an artist friend who makes washi, the traditional Japanese paper. It's a joyful reunion after 12 long years and she identifies with the love for peace and nature expressed in these washi works. Local products for staying cool in the heat of this old washi-making prefecture's summer include the oiled or lacquered paper mats known as yuton. She appreciates that traditional wisdom when she visits the workshop of a yuton craftsperson and experiences the coolness herself by sitting and then lying on a yuton mat.
