Senju

Senju. Most people imagine cheap lodgings and little else. But even though it's not a big tourist destination, this part of town has a lot to offer. Join us on a tour of Senju's best!

Minami-Senju (1 min. 36 sec.)

Welcome to the Minami-Senju district. It's packed with hotels for backpackers. The area is known as Sanya.

Over one hundred hotels offering rates around 2,000 yen per night. Ultra-cheap for Tokyo. Young tourists on a budget from all over the world gather here.

Kita-Senju area (8 min. 01 sec.)

Their stroll begins in front of Kita-Senju Station. Its retail complexes and shopping Streets are rather nondescript. But walk a little way, and the real Senju comes into view.

This house belonged to a paper merchant in the Edo Period. The building has stood on this corner for 150 years. Although the business is out of operation, the family still lives here.

Many old buildings still stand in Senju. Walking along, you see many traditional warehouses, the kind that has almost disappeared from more central parts of Tokyo. This one's well-maintained earthen walls are impressive.

Bathhouse (5 min. 17 sec.)

No visit to Senju would be complete without a trip to one of its historic public baths. This one is an imposing building in the style of samurai times. It's so grand, you'd never think it was a bathhouse!

Admission is 450 yen per person.

Tokyo is known for having especially hot baths. The water temperature is 43 degrees. They can't stand the heat long enough to admire the mural!

Adachi Market (7 min. 38 sec.)

Anyone can visit this fish market: just sign in at the front desk. But make sure to go with someone who speaks Japanese. No English spoken there.

This is Adachi Market. This large fish market is part of Senju's tradition as a market district.

Fish are brought here overnight from all around Japan... the market is jam-packed with them. Along with Tsukiji, this is the center of fish wholesaling in Tokyo.
