In Quest of Energy
Episode 1: Expanding Need

As Asia's developing nations experience unprecedented economic growth, they are consuming increasingly larger amounts of energy. By 2050, the global population is expected to have reached 9.6 billion and energy consumption is expected to have doubled. Meanwhile, to keep pace with the demands, energy resources are being developed at a furious pace and the possibility of depletion may soon no longer be an issue. This series takes a look at the front lines of energy science, as countries worldwide precariously march toward their goals.

Experts once predicted that our reserves of fossil fuels would reach depletion within the next few decades. Today, however, resource-development projects, into which countries around the world are pouring huge amounts of money, are rapidly progressing. Brazil has begun oil drilling in the hadal zone; Canada has successfully extracted crude oil from oil sands, becoming one of the world's leading oil-producing countries; and a new business system that allows nuclear power plants to be installed at low cost has been established, allowing developing countries with little financial resources access to nuclear power. This episode takes an in-depth and behind-the-scenes look at the enormous expansion of the energy industry.
