China: Mixed Signals

Export data from China offers a small ray of hope for battered financial markets. Investors are dumping stocks and other assets, fearing for the health of the global economy. But China's strong export results in September point to robust demand in developed countries. On the other hand, weak car sales and commodity prices suggest trouble ahead for the world's number two economy. Steve Wang, Chief China Economist of Reorient Financial Markets, gives us his take on the conflicting data.

Joko Widodo takes over as Indonesia's president this week. Fixing the economy is shaping up to be his main challenge; his government needs to stabilize the currency, control inflation and reduce the budget deficit. But with political opponents securing key positions in Parliament, there are growing concerns about Widodo's ability to carry out reforms. We talk to Ndiame Diop, Lead Economist for Indonesia at the World Bank.
