India's GDP Growth Surges
India is enjoying strong economic growth. Official statistics show the country's GDP even outpaced China's during the first three months of the year.
Government officials say Asia's third-largest economy grew 7.5 percent year-on-year between January and March 2015. That compares with 7 percent growth in China over the same period.
Officials attribute the figures to the stabilizing effect of cheap crude oil on commodity prices. They say private consumption is also picking up.
A breakdown by industry shows robust gains in the manufacturing sector, with 8.4 percent. The service sector , including hotels and transport , grew even faster, at rate of 14.1 percent.
Agriculture declined for the second straight quarter, falling 1.4 percent. The mining industry recorded a modest progression of 2.3 percent.
