An Israeli boy was killed in a cross-border attack from Syria into the occupied Golan Heights. It was the first fatality in Israel since the start of the Syrian civil war.
On Sunday, unidentified assailants attacked workers repairing fences along the border with Syria.
A 13-year-old boy, whose father was one of the workers, was killed in the attack, while two others were injured.
Israeli tanks returned fire to Syrian side in retaliation.
Stray artillery rounds have often landed in the Golan Heights since start of fighting between the Syrian military and rebel forces.
The Israeli military released a statement saying the attack was deliberate. It warned that it would not hesitate to carry out further retaliation if cross-border attacks continue.
