I want to know about broadcasting rights for international broadcasts / Why can't I view some images “due to broadcasting rights”?
- Conditions of use and other regulations are very strict for broadcasts of popular international sporting events that many people want to see.
- Almost all of these events can only be broadcast with the permission of the sporting federation, etc. involved. The broadcaster has to purchase the broadcasting rights to provide the service.
- NHK does its best to secure image usage rights. However, in the case of popular events, use of the images of other stations, etc. is strictly defined by the permitted number, length and geographical area of the broadcasts. Rights are typically limited to use only in domestic broadcasts; permission is not granted for distribution of those images abroad.
- We usually remove any images that cannot be broadcast overseas in advance at the editing stage. Most of the news is, however, broadcast live simultaneously with domestic news in Japan. In such cases, we have to cover the prohibited images with still pictures.
