Tsuki no ue o hashiru kuruma no gijutsu o riyoo-shita robotto o tsukatte, shuukaku-shita ringo o hakobu jikken o shita to iu nyuusu desu. Nooka no tasuke ni naru koto ga kitai-sarete imasu. Kono nyuusu o tooshite, atarashii gijutsu ga tamesareteiru nippon no noogyoo to, sore ni kanren-shita hyoogen o manabimashoo.
Today’s news story is about an experiment with a robot that uses lunar rover technology to carry harvested apples. It is expected to help farmers. Follow along to learn expressions related to new technology being tested in Japan’s agriculture sector.

An experiment in which a robot was used to transport apples was conducted in a field in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture.
Explanation
Fields that are used to cultivate vegetables, fruits, assorted grains, flowers and so forth are called 「畑（hatake）」. When we use a modifier that describes the type of field, it’s pronounced 「ばたけ（batake）」. For example, a potato field is 「ジャガイモばたけ（jagaimo-batake）」.
In Japanese, paddy fields in particular are called 「田んぼ（tanbo）」 or 「田（ta）」. Paddy fields are irrigated with water and are mainly used to grow rice.
「実験（jikken）」 means “experiment.” It’s the process of testing a hypothesis to see if it’s right. The experiment in our news story was a proof-of-concept to see if this apple-transporting robot could actually be useful to farmers who are struggling because of a shortage of workers.
When developing a product, running repeated 「実験」 helps the developer to verify and refine their ideas. A similar but subtly different word is 「試験（shiken）」, which refers to a “test of ability.” When a product reaches the stage where the developer wants to make sure that it functions as designed, it runs 「試験」.
このロボットは、宮城県の会社が作りました。NASA が作った月の上を走って調べる車の技術を利用しています。石や土などがあって平らではない畑の中でも走ることができます。

Explanation
「自動（jidoo）」 means “automatic.” It’s a word we use to describe things that are self-propelled or able to operate independently of human control. So there’s 「自動車（jidoosha）」 automobile, 「自動ドア（jidoo-doa）」 automatic door, and 「自動販売機（jidoo-hanbaiki）」 vending machine.

Explanation
Sophia starts the conversation by saying she saw a news story yesterday and then shares her thoughts about it. When starting a conversation, you can use the expression 「S（sentence）のを見たんですけど、～」. In cases where you use a noun, the expression is 「ニュースを見た」. But in cases like in the dialogue, 「ニュースで介護ロボットについてやっていた」, where it is expressed as a passive, you say 「のを見た」. A plain form verb is used before 「のを見た」.
