Introduction
新型コロナの影響で日本に来る外国人留学生が減る中、文部科学省は留学生の数を以前同様に戻すため、日本への留学や就職を支援することを計画しているというニュースです。このニュースを通して、「割合」や「体験」など、よく使われる表現を学びましょう。

Shingata-korona no eekyoo de nihon ni kuru gaikokujin-ryuugakusee ga heru naka, monbu-kagakushoo wa ryuugakusee no kazu o izen dooyoo ni modosu tame, nihon e no ryuugaku ya shuushoku o shien-suru koto o keekaku-shite iru to iu nyuusu desu. Kono nyuusu o tooshite,「wariai」ya「taiken」nado, yoku tsukawareru hyoogen o manabimashoo.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the number of international students in Japan has declined. Today’s news story is about Japan’s efforts to support international students with their studies and job opportunities in order to restore the number of international students to pre-pandemic level. Explanation
「割合（wariai）」 means “percentage” or “proportion”. It’s a way to express the ratio of a part of something to the whole amount. In Japanese when we want to describe proportions, we sometimes use the katakana loanword 「パーセント（paasento）」, but we also use words like 「割合」）and 「割（wari）」. 「１割」 specifically refers to “one-tenth,” or in other words, “ten percent.” 「３割」 means “30%.” Let’s say you go to a store and the price tag of an item says 「５割引」. That means it’s 50% off. 「１０割」 means “100%.” If you’re into Japanese cuisine, you might have heard the term 「十割そば（juuwari-soba）」. That refers to soba noodles that are made from 100% buckwheat.
So in today’s news story, 「20％少なくなりました（nijuppaasento sukunaku narimashita）」 could also be phrased as 「２割減りました（ni-wari herimashita）」.

Explanation
「体験（taiken）」 means experience — specifically, hands-on experience. We also use the word 「経験（keeken）」, which is a broader term that also encompasses the practical lessons and skills you learn from what you’ve experienced. 「体験」 refers to a one-time or trial experience. For instance, 「体験入学（taiken-nyuugaku）」 is when you attend a few classes at a school to see what it’s like and find out if that school is a good fit. Another example is 「この前、恐ろしい体験をした（kono mae, osoroshii taiken o shita）」, they want to talk to you about a harrowing experience they recently had.
「経験」, on the other hand, is more open-ended and is about more than just an individual event. For example, 「ボランティア活動の経験を生かし、NPO を立ち上げた（borantia-katsudoo no keeken o ikashi, NPO o tachiageta）」 means “I drew on my experience as a volunteer worker and founded an NPO.”
