At the Ukrainian Embassy in Tokyo’s Minato Ward, an area has been set up for flowers and praying for those who have died. Some people bring money to donate.

Explanation

「寄付(kifu)」 means to present money or a personal possession to a public organization, charity, cause, etc. If you are donating something other than money or a personal possession, we do not call it 「寄付」. For example, blood donation is 「献血(kenketsu)」. Organ donation is 「臓器提供(zooki-teekyoo)」.

A woman who has a one-year-old said,“ I saw on the news a woman gave birth at an evacuation site , and also that children died. My heart aches. I hope my donation will be helpful.”

Explanation

「役に立つ(yaku ni tatsu)」 is a phrase we use to express that we find something convenient and useful. In contrast, 「役に立ててほしい」 is a phrase we use when we want something to be useful for others rather than ourselves. 「役に立てて」 can also be shortened to 「役立てて(yaku-datete)」, for example, you could say 「この寄付を役立ててほしい。」.

ウクライナ大使館によると、寄付のための銀行口座に、3月7日までに15万人ぐらいから約40億円が集まりました。

Explanations

English

According to the Ukrainian Embassy, its bank account for donations had collected approximately 4 billion yen from about 150,000 people by March 7.

Explanation

When we make a statement that is not speculation and we want to indicate that it is backed up by evidence or a reliable source, we use the expression 「~によると」 or 「~によれば」 before the information we want to convey. This sentence is relaying facts and figures that were announced by the Ukranian Embassy. So the information is prefaced with 「ウクライナ大使館(taishikan)によると」. If the source is a rumor, we use the phrase「噂(uwasa)によると」.

I got an email from a local children’s association, do you know what it says?

Explanation

For people studying Japanese, reading Japanese emails and notices of kanji characters can be a daunting task. While learning to decipher it on your own can certainly be a rewarding approach, asking someone around you who is fluent in Japanese for help can also be a great way to practice your Japanese. Depending on the content, it may be difficult for the person to answer your questions. It is polite to begin by asking them 「わかりますか?」. If the person you’re asking is already familiar with the email, you can ask them directly, 「これ、何のメールですか?」. Or, instead of leading with a question like Sophia did, you can explain what you already know by saying 「これ、子ども会のメールなんですが 」(This is an email from a children association ...). It will help the person you’re asking better understand the situation.
