Being the oldest daughter, at 14, Lao Kang had to quit school in order to take care of her parents, and for her siblings to stay in school. She kept asking :”Why me?” She knew that she would never have a chance to go back to school. Until one day, she was introduced to rugby. She saw the opportunity to get out of her current situation and go back to school.

Xaisongkham Induangchanthy is a Lao filmmaker based in Vientiane, Laos. He received a master’s degree in Media Arts Production from the City College of New York, under the Fulbright Programme. He co-founded ‘Lao New Wave Cinema’, a group of emerging Lao filmmakers. In 2012, he was selected to take part in Asian Film Academy, Busan. ‘Because I am a Girl…’ is his first documentary, co-produced with a Japanese producer.
