Design Festa Summer 2018

For this installment of "On Site," we visit the special summer break edition of the Design Festa, the second outing this year. It's an event where anyone with any kind of creative or artistic offering can freely participate. Reporter Lemi Duncan brings a female perspective to offer a broad vision of all there is to find here.

Schedule: Schedule: Aug. 4 - 5, 2018
Location: Tokyo Big Sight

Since its start in 1994, Design Festa ordinarily been held twice a year in spring and fall, but this year, they've added a special summer edition. Regardless of age, nationality, or genre, it covers a vast array of creative offerings including graphic arts, music, sundries, and fashion. Professional or amateur, anyone with an original creation is welcome to participate in this artistic event. Highlights from this coverage include small wool felt animals, lovely accessories made of the same material as bread, jewelry with a unique triangular construction, a live painting performance by a young artist who paints using heat, "creepy but cute" vegetables figurines shaped like people, robotic whales made of wood with metal components, charming one-of-a-kind handmade watches, and soap bubbles on a stick that won't burst even if you touch them.

Single Board, Multipurpose

Creators around the world use circuitry called development boards as a base platform for building a wide range of devices. For our "Gadgets" segment, we look at a new board on the market that's gained the attention of developers with its high-performance features and versatility that make it a perfect tool for creating IoT devices.

Sony's "Spresense," is a new single-board computer for developers. In spite of its small size of 5 by 2cm, it's equipped with 6 CPUs. It also boasts low power consumption, an integrated GPS receiver, and a high-resolution audio codec. The latter makes it particularly suited for applications that use sound. The GPS functions work well for devices such as drones, while the low power consumption is perfect for AI solutions like image recognition, which normally require much power. Other potential applications include devices that can keep a distance from obstacles, small robotic vehicles that follow a path using sensors, and time-lapse camera systems. Those would enable testing self-driving technology at a prototype level before it's implemented in the real world. Spresense is small but it's packed with big potential for both hobby projects and the development of full-fledged IoT products.

Eat Your Sheets of Greens!

Top chefs are expected to produce dishes that are both delicious and creative. And there's nothing like a new ingredient to set their creativity on fire. In this "Special Report," Great Gear's resident food reporter Brian Hughes samples a unique food product, which initially started as a way to keep vegetables from going to waste.

"Vegheet" are edible sheets made of vegetables, but not just any vegetables; they're substandard vegetables that can't be sold at supermarkets. Keisuke Soda, the president of the company that created Vegheet, explains that his goal of commercializing vegetables with decreased market value led to the product's development. The versatile 0.1mm-thick sheets can be easily cut to the desired size and folded or rolled to create amazing dishes that are as beautiful as they are tasty. Making Vegheet takes more than just boiling, pureeing, and drying the vegetables. The key is said to be in the shaping method, which remains a company secret. Sales of Vegheet have begun in Europe, and they may soon be available in the US and other parts of Asia. Carrot and Japanese radish are the only flavors currently available, but they plan to add pumpkin, spinach and tomato to the lineup within the year.
