China supports full UN membership for Palestine
China has expressed support for Palestine's bid for full UN membership.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a news conference on Tuesday that seeking independent statehood is the inalienable right of Palestinians. He said it is a foundation and precondition for the peaceful coexistence of Palestine and Israel.
The spokesman also said China understands, respects and supports Palestine's bid for UN membership.
China's backing will certainly boost Palestine's bid for UN membership, as this requires a recommendation from the Security Council, of which China is a permanent member.
Another permanent member, the United States, is threatening to veto the bid, saying it will obstruct the resumption of peace talks with Israel.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas notified UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon that he will submit an application on Friday.
The diplomatic maneuvering is likely to continue until the last minute.
